About Paul Klee
Paul Klee was born in Switzerland and loved both music and art. Klee works were influenced by artistic movement (expressionism, cubism and surrealism). Klee especially loved bright colors and simplicity in his painting. He admired music and color and his paintings were usually arranged like blocks of melody. By the time Klee died he had produced more than 9,000 works of art! He painted objects that encouraged people to feel emotions rather than painting a realistic object.
He liked to paint with as few lines as possible. Sometimes the objects or people he painted looked more like colors and shapes rather than the real thing. This art is called abstract art! Klee’s artwork is easily appreciated by children and is a popular artist to study in our art class.
What inspired Klee ?
Klee was reader and lover of music. He was also beautiful writer and gifted violinist. He was very interested in children art and those suffering psychological disorder. Paul Klee believed they had a power to see and regarded their art as pure forms of expression.
In 1914, trip to Tunisia deeply affected Klee. Klee was impressed by the quality of light in Tunisia, he also begin to delve into the “cool romanticism of abstraction” After returning from Tunisia trip, Klee painted his first pure abstract art ‘In the Style of Kairouan’ in 1914, this art work was composed by coloured rectangles and a few circles. Coloured rectangles were basic building blocks, few scholars associate this with musical notes.
Sun and Castle
Castle and Sun is one of Paul Klee’s most iconic works of art. It’s a mix of colors and geometric shapes like squares, triangles and diamond shapes along with a huge circle for the sun. Art is Basic recreates this artwork in a lovely collage, which the kids can make based on colors of their choice. Use a mix of watercolor paper, magazines and scrap paper for a lovely effect.
Cat & Bird
A treasured painting by Paul Klee is the basis for this whimsical tale about a cat and a bird, and about the themes of freedom and friendship. A cat lives in a house filled with toys, but everyday she dreams of being free like the bird she watches through the window. Finally with the bird’s help, she is able to escape and dance on the roofs of the city by moonlight. This lovely story unfolds in a series of playful, brilliantly coloured illustrations based on the artist Paul Klee’s work.
