Pichwai Painting - The Folk Art of Rajasthan

A brief look

Both the Mughals and the ancient Indians were fans of the Pichwai painting style. It was revived in the 16th century and is being used in India and other countries. The Sanskrit terms “pichh,” which means “back,” and “wais,” which means “hanging,” are the source of the word “pichhwai.” The life of Shrinathji, a form of Lord Krishna clutching the Govardhan hill, is shown in the majority of Pichwai paintings. Most of the Pichwai paintings show Lord Krishna playing the flute and portray his boyhood experiences, complete with Gopikas, cows, and calves. Lord Krishna is the main subject of the textile murals, which are painted.
