Pattachitra Painting Class

Experience the Ancient Artworks from the Indian State of Odisha

Started in Bengal centuries ago, Pattachitra paintings have evolved into an art form that’s now popular across India and beyond. Characterised by their strong use of color, imaginative motifs and designs, and the portrayal of straightforward subjects, most often mythical in nature, Pattachitra paintings are created on canvas with the help of natural dyes and vegetable pigments to give them their distinctive look. As one of the oldest forms of Indian Folk Art, Pattachitra painting is traditionally taught from one generation to another within families, so there are very few formal pattachitra painting classes available today.

The mythological stories behind every pattachitra painting style

The pattachitra style of painting is one of the oldest forms of Indian folk art, and is characterized by its use of bright colors, imaginative motifs, and straightforward subjects. Often, these paintings depict mythical stories and scenes from Hindu epics. In this course, you’ll learn how to create your own pattachitra paintings on canvas, using traditional techniques passed down through generations. You’ll begin with simple patterns, then explore more complex designs with motifs such as peacocks, celestial beings, animals (especially horses), dancers and musicians. You’ll also learn about mandalas–sacred symbols representing knowledge and enlightenment in Buddhism–and their significance in pattachitra paintings.
